VelociHOST includes Rocky Linux on VPS Server Options

Introduction

The CentOS Project shortened the End-of-Life deadline for CentOS 8, being December 31, 2021, the last day the operating system updates will be available. CentOS 8 will be transformed to an upstream (development) branch of Red Hat Enterprise Linux called CentOS Stream. Previously, CentOS 8 was released as a stable branch.

This sudden change of course for the CentOS project, generated a prompt reaction from the community. CentOS has been widely used on production environments around the world and this move from the CentOS project leaves a lot of these deployments without the security patches and performance updates needed on production environments.

This is where Rocky Linux comes in, developed as a community enterprise Operating System designed to be 100% bug-for-bug compatible with Enterprise Linux. Rocky Linux is designed to work as a downstream build, just as CentOS did in the past. This approach allows Rocky Linux to build releases after they have been added to the upstream vendor.

Rocky Linux 8.4 “Green Obsidian” was released by The Rocky Enterprise Software Foundation on June 21, 2021. The Rocky Linux 8.4 distribution is a direct alternative to CentOS Linux or Red Hat Enterprise Linux. It is considered the first stable release and introduces new upstream modules such as PostgreSQL 13, MariaDB 10.5, Python 3.9, Redis 6, SWIG 4.0, OpenSCA 1.3.4, scap-security-guide 0.1.54, and Subversion 1.14.

Other exciting changes include a persistent Pacemaker resource agent for maintaining the state data, and support for Ansible modules that can be used for automated management of role-based access control (RBAC) in Identity Management (IdM).

Rocky Linux and VelociHOST

VelociHOST includes Rocky Linux on all VPS service plans (Virtual Private Servers) automated installation scripts, with pre-made templates and official ISO files readily available. Effective immediately, VPS servers can be instantly deployed with Rocky Linux 8.4 from our Miami and New York data centers. VelociHOST is also working on the automated installation scripts to include Rocky Linux on our Bare Metal Dedicated Servers and GPU Bare Metal Servers options.

Additionally, you can download Rocky Linux 8.4 from the VelociHOST mirror. This first stable release is supported on 64-bit (x86_64) and AArch64 (ARM 64-bit) architectures, and it is available as Minimal, Boot, or Full editions.

It is also important to note that the community has created the migrate2rocky tool to aid in the conversion to Rocky Linux 8.4 from other Enterprise Linux systems such as CentOS 8.4, Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8.4, and Oracle Linux 8.4.
