Debian 12 available on VelociHOST Bare Metal Servers

VelociHOST is proud to announce the general availability of Debian 12 “bookworm”. The new operating system can be installed on Bare Metal Dedicated Servers on our Miami data center.

Debian 12, codenamed «bookworm,» has been released after an impressive 1 year, 9 months, and 28 days of development. This new stable version is backed by the Debian Security team and the Debian Long Term Support team, ensuring support for the next 5 years.

New archive area

One significant change is the introduction of a new archive area, «non-free-firmware,» separating non-free firmware from other non-free packages. This separation facilitates the creation of various official installation images.

Upgraded desktop environments

Debian 12 bookworm comes with several desktop environments, including Gnome 43, KDE Plasma 5.27, LXDE 11, LXQt 1.2.0, MATE 1.26, and Xfce 4.18.

New packages available

This release boasts an impressive addition of over 11,089 new packages, bringing the total package count to 64,419, while over 6,296 obsolete packages have been removed. Additionally, 43,254 packages have been updated. The total disk usage for bookworm amounts to 365,016,420 kB (365 GB), consisting of 1,341,564,204 lines of code.

Multiple languages

Debian 12 bookworm is enriched with translated man pages in multiple languages, including Czech, Danish, Greek, Finnish, Indonesian, Macedonian, Norwegian (Bokmål), Russian, Serbian, Swedish, Ukrainian, and Vietnamese. Furthermore, all the systemd man pages are now available in German.

Debian Med and Astro Blend

The Debian Med Blend introduces the shiny-server package, which simplifies scientific web applications using R. The team has maintained Continuous Integration support for Debian Med team packages. Install the metapackages at version 3.8.x for Debian bookworm.

The Debian Astro Blend continues to cater to professional astronomers, enthusiasts, and hobbyists with updates to almost all software packages in the blend. It now includes astap and planetary-system-stacker, aiding image stacking and astrometry resolution, as well as openvlbi, the open source correlator.

Stronger Security features

Another noteworthy feature is the reintroduction of Secure Boot support on ARM64, allowing users of UEFI-capable ARM64 hardware to boot with Secure Boot mode enabled for enhanced security.

Package and upgrades

Debian 12 bookworm boasts numerous updated software packages, including Apache 2.4.57, BIND DNS Server 9.18, Cryptsetup 2.6, Dovecot MTA 2.3.19, Emacs 28.2, GIMP 2.10.34, GNU Compiler Collection 12.2, GnuPG 2.2.40, Inkscape 1.2.2, and many others.

Multiple architecture support

Debian 12 is designed to be a universal operating system, suitable for various use cases, such as desktop systems, netbooks, development servers, cluster systems, and database, web, and storage servers. The release is officially supported on nine architectures, including 32-bit PC (i386), 64-bit PC (amd64), 64-bit ARM (arm64), ARM EABI (armel), ARMv7 (EABI hard-float ABI, armhf), little-endian MIPS (mipsel), 64-bit little-endian MIPS (mips64el), 64-bit little-endian PowerPC (ppc64el), and IBM System z (s390x).

Upgrade from Debian 11

Upgrading to Debian 12 from the previous release, Debian 11 bullseye, is handled by the APT package management tool for most configurations. However, before upgrading, it is crucial to back up important data and configuration information to ensure a smooth transition.

Debian’s release notes and installation guide provide detailed instructions for a painless upgrade. As always, the Debian community continues its commitment to providing the best operating system possible, and Debian 12 bookworm is another significant milestone in this journey.
